The
main
streets
of
Pompeii
and
Herculaneum
were
paved
with
stone
and
wide
enough
for
carts,
horses,
mules,
donkeys
and
sometimes
chariots;
there
was
a
different
sort
of
pollution
from
traffic
in
those
days.
They
often
had
footpaths
and
stepping
stones
to
allow
people
to
cross
the
street
without
getting
dirty
or
wet.
Smaller
streets
and
alleyways
were
suitable
only
for
foot
traffic.
